Since then, several alternative venues were discussed, including countries from both South America and the Concacaf region. The United States, Canada, and Mexico—all hosts of the 2026 FIFA World Cup—were considered as potential hosts, with the idea of using Copa América 2024 as a preparatory event, similar to Qatar’s use of the Arab Cup in 2021.
The U.S. had already hosted a special edition of the tournament in 2016, the Copa América Centenario.
